Honours Thesis: Are the Joneses Winning?
University of Sydney ยท Sydney, Australia
This independent Honours research project investigated the relationship between local income inequality and individual wellbeing in Australia, examining whether relative income differences within local communities influence subjective wellbeing beyond absolute income. The research combined economic theory with empirical econometric analysis to explore the behavioural and social impacts of inequality, contributing to broader discussions surrounding income distribution, public policy, and economic wellbeing. By leveraging Australian household and labour data, and rigorous quantitative methods, the project generated evidence-based insights into one of the most significant socio-economic issues affecting modern societies.
Key Contributions
- Designed and executed an independent Honours research project from proposal development through to final dissertation.
- Applied advanced econometric techniques to analyse Australian microdata using Stata, including data cleaning, statistical modelling, and hypothesis testing.
- Conducted a comprehensive review of academic literature on inequality, wellbeing, and behavioural economics to develop a robust theoretical framework.
- Interpreted complex quantitative findings and translated them into evidence-based policy insights through academic research and written communication.
